164: STAR WARS Antiquity

As we all brace for the end of a decade-long Star Wars fast and properly fortify our emotions (lest we be blindsided they way we all were during the infamous Summer Of '99) it's important that we take stock of the 6 episodes that have led us, for better or for worse, to THE FORCE AWAKENS.

On this week's episode we basically get all of our collective Star Wars baggage out on the table, purge our respective resentments, and look forward to a potential salvation in the form of J.J.'s upcoming opus.

"That boy way our last hope" Kenobi once said (presumably referencing George Lucas).

"No, there is another" Yoda demurred (obviously referring to a certain bespectacled franchise savior).

In less than 48 hours we'll know how this all shakes out...

163: Post Thanksgiving Holiday Catchup

We're back.

The Bond hangover has subsided and now it's time to get on to more pressing holiday movie season matters. In this 90 minute episode we play serious catchup, pull a proverbial "speed date" and discuss 8 films back to back, culminating with a review of CREED. It's a robust episode, to be sure, but a pacey one, nonetheless. We discuss:

-CAROL
-BROOKLYN
-THE GOOD DINOSAUR
-THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY PART 2
-ROOM
-SPOTLIGHT
-TRUMBO
-CREED

Awards season is upon us. Act like you've been here before.

162: The Long-Awaited SPECTRE Pod

The "Autumn of Bond" comes to an end ends and so begins the " Winter of Our Bond Discontent".

Join us for a terse conversation about the cruel realities that too often pair with expectation and somberly speculate with us about "what might have been".

We spent 10 episodes discussing 007 and his exploits. Now it's time to put a moratorium on the subject matter for a while and let the man rest, reassess his legacy, and what we can all learn from his SPECTRE misfire.

This should have been a victory lap. Instead it's a wake up call. Let's get into it...

160: The 19th, 20th, and 21st Films of The 007 Countdown (with special guest Dan Kelly!)

This is a big one, folks.
With only 5 films to discuss before our SPECTRE review we decided to invite friend of the podcast, Bond aficionado, and all around raconteur Daniel Kelly to join us for this week's epic, 100 minute episode. Dan was particularly eloquent during our 45 minute dissection of the series' "quintessential installment". Our reactions might surprise you.
All good things must end. And, unfortunately this amazing journey will, in less than a week. Let's make the most of the time we have left, fellow Bondees.

5. ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE
4. THE SPY WHO LOVED ME
3. GOLDFINGER

158: STEVE JOBS and BRIDGE OF SPIES offer a brief respite from Bond talk

Experiencing 007 Countdown fatigue? If so you'll be happy to hear we're taking the day off from hot Bond talk to spar about Oscar hopefuls STEVE JOBS and BRIDGE OF SPIES.
We might even find a brief window to sound off about what went wrong with a member of the fall's mounting roster of flops- CRIMSON PEAK.

Tune in, turn up, pod-out.
Something like that.

151: The Late Summer Catch-Up and the CASSIDY RED Wrap-Up

Matt's back from Arizona, the duo has reunited, and all is right with the universe.
Much to discuss, not the least of which is:

-Telluride
-THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E
-STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTOM
-THE END OF THE TOUR

-and a brief Q&A about Matt's time on the set of the recently wrapped production CASSIDY RED.
It's all happening.

WLM Podcast #149: The M:I:RN Gushfest

We Like Movies. It's the truth. It says it right there in the title of the website and it's not false advertising.
But occasionally, often in fact, we LOVE movies. This week's episode addresses one such occurrence.

Oh, MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE: ROGUE NATION, how do we love thee? Let us count the ways.

We also love Netflix, apparently, and we spend the first 15 minutes gushing about that.
This episode is basically just one big love fest. There's a whole lotta love.
So listen in, and share the love.

WLM Podcast #143: EX MACHINA et al.

We're back.
After a lengthy estrangement, Oscar and I reconvene for (no ego or hyperbole) quite possibly one of the most fruitful and rewarding podcast discussions we've ever had.

Maybe it was our time apart. Maybe it was the fact that we were positively brimming with opinions about this week's discussion topics. But whatever it was, we were firing on all cylinders tonight and we're especially proud of this episode.
That being said- it's a long one! So dig in and get comfortable.

Also- We discuss and spoil WHILE WE'RE YOUNG and EX MACHINA so if you haven't seen them yet you may want to bow out around the 35 minute mark. Fair warning.
(sigh) That'll do, pod. That'll do.

WLM Podcast #140: IT FOLLOWS, yes it does

There is some light at the end of the first quarter movie season tunnel, dear listeners.
The first glimmer came courtesy of the recently-minted "instant genre classic" IT FOLLOWS- the first film worth its weight in DCP to hit multiplexes in months!

More light will expand this weekend when a certain 7th installment of a Corona-fueled franchise kicks off the summer movie season.
But until then, IT FOLLOWS and it pods about it.

Plus hot-trailer-talk (natch).
Don't let the door hitcha on the way out, March!

WLM Podcast #123: GONE GIRL pod at long last (with special guest Kendall Horn!)

Thank god... GONE GIRL is finally here.

We celebrate the arrival of one of our most anticipated films of 2014 with a robust, impassioned discussion that introduces special guest KENDALL HORN into the We Like Movies lexicon.

This is a good one, dear listeners.
You can trust us. We're podcasters.

WLM Podcast #118: The Career of Steven Soderbergh and first reactions to THE KNICK

Steven Soderbergh has smoothly transitioned from movies to television and his new Cinemax drama THE KNICK is already garnering some of the strongest praise of his career.

Join us as we sharpen the edges of our fine-toothed comb before using it to dissect the career of the great American masters. We then spend the last 20 minutes of the podcast chatting about the first 2 episodes of THE KNICK. But, not to worry squeamish listeners, or those of you who are woefully behind in your summer television consumption. We steer clear of anything resembling a spoiler.

It's okay. You can trust us. Does this napkin smell like chloroform to you?

EDITOR'S NOTE: Despite making a concerted effort to be as comprehensive as possible in our overview of Soderbergh's filmography we still managed to accidentally gloss over his HBO political series K-STREET as well as his late-period throwback actioner HAYWIRE. Apologies to fans or ardent proponents of either.

WLM Podcast #100!!! We celebrate our centennial anniversary with THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL discussion

Well, dear friends. A conversation that began as a very casual, on again, off again chit chat about movies, television, literature, and pop culture as whole, somehow morphed and matured into a bona fide blog. That blog gave birth to a podcast and said podcast somehow made it to a triple digit episode count.

If you're reading this right now, then you had much to do with us making it this far and, on the occasion of our 100th episode, we would like to thank YOU so very much for tuning in and being a part of the We Like Movies family.
We really love continuing this ongoing conversation. It means so very much to us. And, with your support, continued patronage, and help in spreading the good word to your fellow enthusiastic cinephiles (or even the cinematically averse... what the hell.... we're not uptight if they're not) we hope to keep this going well into the quadruple digits.

Thanks so much, WLM-ers. This week we discuss Wes Anderson's newest ode du tableau- THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL. Listen early. Listen often.

Happy Hundy.
