Fleeting Thoughts from a Movie Theater , October 10th, 2015:
Michael Fassbender, as the titular “hero” and Jeff Daniels as Apple CEO John Sculley are watching the groundbreaking “1984” Macintosh commercial directed by Ridley Scott in the diegesis of Danny Boyle’s STEVE JOBS biopic.
Meanwhile–in the auditorium next door–Ridley Scott’s new film THE MARTIAN also features Jeff Daniels in an administrative position. His character is standing in a conference room having a discussion about the “Council of Elrond” from “The Fellowship of the Ring”. Sharing the conference room but not contributing to the conversation is Sean Bean, who was not only AT the Council of Elrond in Peter Jackson’s adaptation of Tolkien’s book, but was arguably the chattiest participant of the argument that took place there.
Bean then turns to address Benedict Wong, a British thespian who–in addition to turning in fine work in this film as well as Ridley Scott’s last sci-fi epic PROMETHEUS–is probably best remembered playing an engineer whose negligence basically sets the entire plot in motion in the film SUNSHINE. Said film was shot by cinematographer Alwin H. Küchler and directed by Danny Boyle, whose only other professional collaboration occurred on a little film entitled… wait for it… STEVE JOBS.
